Amazing accomplishments

The accomplishments of the people who have lived, worked and built the USA and Canada over the last 200 years are truly remarkable. In this short period of time these two nations have grown into the envy of most of the world. Our standard of living is second to none when you measure against other countries of our size and populations. The innovation, resiliency, work ethic and patriotism have set these people apart from any other in history. While the Roman empires of the past, and others like them had many of the same characteristics, their societies did not contain the basic freedoms and human compassion of those that are prevalent in North America right up to today. It is then such a shame that these things are not celebrated as they should be. Instead when you pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV news the ratio of positive to negative is generally 90% to 10%. Of course the news industry is now a business and the lofty ethical standards that once drove their reporting have now been replaced by the proverbial bottom line. Certainly the crime and relative “bad” things have to be reported, but is this all that has to be brought to our attention? Instead of feeling proud of ourselves, our country and our accomplishments instead you get the feeling that we are all going to “hell in a hand basket”. The op-eds are worse as they have free rein not only to criticize but to denigrate and destroy as well. The generations before us have laid the groundwork for every individual in our country to have two most desired and precious things. They are not government entitlement’s, they are not free health care or any other handout. These two things are freedom and opportunity. With these two things the generations before us built a strong and vibrant nation. Sure we have problems and we will solve them but let’s not address them through fear, guilt and negativism and let’s always be proud of what we, as a people made up of many cultures, have accomplished.

Freedom ! But not ?

I don't think that there is need for the accountability of media. Some people think that the way media work is controversial. The people of America and Canada live, work and do their recreational activities freely. Thanks for the informative post. I really like to take part in the topics like that.

Amazing accomplishments

While I agree that we need to celebrate the accomplishments made in North America over the past 200 years, I fail to fully accept that media, specifically op eds, serve to denigrate/destroy those accomplishments. Destroy what exactly?
The generations before us did indeed pave the way for a number of freedoms....such as freedom of information and freedom of speech.
I believe that exercising those freedoms is exactly how we came to be what we are today as a society.
The innovation, resiliency, work ethic and patriotism that you identify as being the result of the generations before us, was fuelled by media. By newspapers/magazines, radio, film and television. My mother and my aunts talk of how they were inspired to work in factories during WWII because of the propaganda clips at movie theatres during the early '40s. Now there's work ethic! Radio and newspapers fuelled patriotism hugely during that era.
The masses were told terrible stories of loss and devastation and heroism....stories that inspired them to be resilient.
There were stories of how governments discovered ways to fight through...to find ways to decipher German codes.........to annihilate cities to stop an enemy that was in modern times, to my knowledge, the first of the suicide bombers.
Television brought the Vietnam war into everyone's living room and made them see, more than ever, what happens in war. What happens to our soldiers in war and what happens when they come home.
I think the media taught us some very valuable and some very painful lessons.
Now, I'm not saying that news today isn't big business. The bottom line is that the truth hurts. And it's also titillating.
It's like how people slow down to look at a car accident. For some sick reason people want to see the horror right up close. Sadly, very sadly, it sells.
Today the news goes beyond the truth. Its no longer that honourable adage that the masses deserve to know the truth. I think there is some truth in that media is giving us the truth that the consumer will most likely buy.
I also believe that most ....no probably all...media venues are serving political purposes. I read any one of the three major dailies in Toronto and can easily pick up their political bent.
But isn't this what freedom of speech and freedom of information is all about?
Whose truth is really the truth ?
It's incumbant on us all to make sure we know enough to make that decision...to know what to question....and then question it and not just accept it.
But hey, yeah....we have come a long way baby.
