Olympic Boycott

There have been discussions of several means of getting attention to show disapproval of the policies of China......

Most difficult to say which approach will be effective in getting a positive response.....

Canada has a huge Chinese population.. and we have many also from Tibet.... best to design approaches to not offend the people in Canada and at the same time bring attention to oppression.

This is not going to be easy, the regime is entrenched and is not about to go away..

Somehow we have to find ways to support change and also to recruit people to the cause.

Torch Protest

The torch protest was the subject of the Radio Noon Phone In Show today on CBC Radio. It was very interesting and featured a Canadian athlete (badminton) living and training abroad. She was quite fine with the protesters using the relay as a protest opportunity - as long as the protests continue to remain peaceful. Her friend carried the torch in France and she was eager to hear of her experiences. She felt it was a shame that the torch probably couldn't be seen by spectators due to the security but from a human rights standpoint - was still ok with it.
A man phoned in and his view was that people would be better served protesting in front of big box stores and refusing to buy goods made in China (good point don't you agree) He also pointed out that the People of China were excited by this opportunity to showcase their country and this protesting would ruin that. The guest on the show pointed out that the Chinese Government didn't bid for the Olympics through any consultation with the People and in fact the People have generally not benefitted to date. (clearing out of low income housing to make space for Olympic facilities, crackdown on human rights activists etc...)

My thoughts - Has this protesting created a greater awareness of the situation in China?

torch protest

Since when did the Chinese government ever consult with the people? The people tried to consult with them in 1989 and a lot of good that did them!
Your question is bang on....the protest has done a great deal to raise awareness of the situation with China and Tibet. But Martin Luther King did a damn fine job raising awareness of racial inequalities through peaceful protest....only angry white people made any of that violent. Just like angry Chinese people are making the China/Tibet issue violent.
